What your result means

The payback period estimates how long it takes to recover the installed charger cost through the annual saving between the home and alternative charging prices entered. It is not a statement about a charger’s value, property value or any tariff.

A payback exists only when the entered home charging cost is lower than the alternative charging cost. If the annual saving is zero or negative, the page shows that there is no financial payback under those assumptions.

Worked example

Illustrative inputs only: £1,000 installed cost, 12,000 annual miles, 3.5 miles/kWh, 7p/kWh at home and 25p/kWh alternative charging. These are not current-price claims.

What this payback period does and does not measure

This calculation measures recovery of the installation cost only through the difference between the two charging prices entered. It does not estimate a vehicle purchase decision, property-value benefit, convenience value, grant, maintenance cost or future tariff changes.

The annual-energy figure is based on annual miles divided by miles per kWh. Use an efficiency that reflects the driving and charging situation you want to assess.

Why mileage changes the result

With the same efficiency and price difference, more annual miles mean more charging energy passes through the comparison. That increases the annual saving and shortens the mathematical payback period.

The table holds the illustrative installation cost, efficiency and charging prices constant while changing annual mileage. It is a scenario comparison, not a prediction of future electricity or public-charging prices.

Practical guidance

Use an installed-cost quote and charging prices that are relevant to your own situation. If you use a mix of home, workplace and public charging, model an alternative price that represents the charging you expect the home charger to replace.

Test a lower annual mileage and a smaller price difference as well as your central case. If the result says no payback, a charger may still have practical benefits, but those benefits are outside this cost-recovery calculation.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The entire annual charging energy is compared at the entered home and alternative prices.
  • The model uses the entered miles/kWh and does not add charging losses, subscription fees, connection fees or time-based charging charges.
  • Installation cost, electricity prices and annual mileage remain unchanged over the calculated period.
  • No property-value, convenience, grant, finance or maintenance benefit is assumed.

What does EV charger payback mean here?

It is the period required for lower modelled home charging cost to recover the installed charger cost you enter.

Why does the page show no financial payback?

It appears when the entered home charging cost is not lower than the alternative charging cost, so there is no positive annual saving to recover the installation cost.

Are the example charger cost and electricity prices current?

No. They are illustrative editable inputs, not current UK installation-cost, electricity-tariff or public-charging-rate claims.

Does higher annual mileage shorten payback?

Usually, with the same positive charging-price difference and efficiency. More miles create more annual charging energy and therefore more modelled saving.
