EV calculator

EV Range Calculator

Estimate mathematical EV range from usable battery capacity and efficiency; it is not a real-world range claim.

Use this calculator

Enter usable battery capacity and efficiency to estimate range.

What your result means

This estimates range by multiplying the usable battery capacity and efficiency you enter. It is an energy-based calculation, not an official or real-world range prediction.

Worked example

Using 60 kWh of usable battery capacity and 4 miles/kWh:

Estimated range
240 miles
Kilometres
386.2 km

The same helper is used by the calculator and reference table.

Formula

Usable battery kWh×miles per kWh\text{Usable battery kWh}\times\text{miles per kWh}

How efficiency changes estimated EV range

Estimated range changes directly with the efficiency entered. With the same usable battery capacity, a vehicle that travels farther per kWh will produce a longer calculated range.

The table below keeps the example usable battery capacity unchanged and varies only the efficiency. These figures are mathematical scenarios rather than WLTP, EPA or real-world range claims.

Why real EV range can differ

The calculation is based only on usable battery capacity and the efficiency entered. Real range can differ because efficiency changes with speed, temperature, heating or air-conditioning use, road conditions, vehicle load and driving style.

The result should therefore be read as a transparent energy-based estimate, not a prediction of the distance a particular vehicle will achieve on every journey.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Usable battery capacity and efficiency are entered by the user.
  • Temperature, charging losses and vehicle-specific driving conditions are not modelled.

Helpful questions

How is EV range calculated?

The calculator multiplies usable battery capacity in kWh by efficiency in miles per kWh.

What does usable battery capacity mean?

It is the amount of battery energy available for driving rather than necessarily the battery's total stated or gross capacity.

Why is my real range different from the result?

Real efficiency varies with driving speed, weather, heating or cooling, road conditions, load and driving style.

Is this the same as WLTP range?

No. This calculator uses only the battery capacity and efficiency values entered and does not reproduce an official vehicle test cycle.

Does cold weather affect EV range?

It can affect real-world efficiency, but the calculator does not automatically adjust for temperature. Enter an efficiency value that reflects the scenario you want to test.
