HMRC Mileage Calculator
Calculate the 2026/27 HMRC approved mileage amount from annual business miles.
Use this calculator
What your result means
This applies HMRC approved mileage allowance payments for tax year 2026/27: cars and vans receive 55p for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p thereafter; motorcycles and cycles use their stated flat rates. It is an approved-amount calculation, not an employer payment instruction.
It is intended for employees using their own vehicle for qualifying business travel. Company-car fuel is a separate advisory-fuel-rate subject.
Worked example
A car or van travelling 12,000 qualifying business miles in 2026/27:
- First 10,000 miles at 55p
- £5,500.00
- 2,000 later miles at 25p
- £500.00
- Approved mileage amount
- £6,000.00
Qualifying passenger payments, where applicable, are separate at 5p per passenger mile for cars and vans.

Source and scope
Rates shown are from HM Revenue & Customs's GOV.UK travel-mileage guidance for tax year 2026/27, effective from 6 April 2026. Check the official source before relying on a result because policy and eligibility can change.
Passenger payments apply only to eligible fellow employees travelling on the same work journey; this simple calculator does not collect passenger miles.
Choose the right mileage tool
Use this page for approved mileage amounts when an employee uses their own car, van, motorcycle or bicycle. Do not substitute it for a company-car advisory fuel rate, which is fuel- and engine-band based.
Assumptions and limitations
- The entered miles are qualifying business miles in one tax year.
- Eligibility, employer policy and record-keeping are not assessed.
- Rates can change in later tax years.
Helpful questions
Does this apply to a company car?
No. Company-car fuel uses advisory fuel rates, not AMAPs.
Why does the car or van rate fall after 10,000 miles?
HMRC sets a separate later-mile rate for the same tax year.
What are the motorcycle and cycle rates?
For 2026/27 they are 24p and 20p per business mile respectively.
Are passenger payments included?
The rate table is shown, but passenger miles are not included in this calculator’s inputs.
Is this a tax refund?
No. It calculates an approved mileage amount, not an individual tax outcome.
